Position Description
The Health Specialist will assist in inspecting, investigating and enforcing food services and environmental health ordinances within the City. This position will perform a variety of duties and responsibilities to protect the public from food borne illness and other communicable diseases.
Over 600 establishments within city limits require inspections by members of the Health Department. Such establishments include: restaurants, convenience stores, nursing homes, day cares, public schools, and any other place of business that may sell food or beverages. The Health Specialist position also inspects swimming pools at apartment complexes, hotels, and motels.
In addition to inspecting various establishments, the Health Specialist position is also required to perform vector control duties. This includes collecting samples to test for the West Nile Virus and spraying to protect against the virus.
Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 semester hours in a basic or applied science.
NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED, however, a Professional Sanitarian Registration is preferred.
Must possess a valid Class C Texas driver's license.
Applicant not already possessing a Professional Sanitarian Registration must pass the Professional Sanitarian exam issued by Texas Department of State Health services or attain Sanitarian Registration within six (6) months of employment. Failure to obtain certification will result in non-disciplinary termination.
May be required to obtain a Non-commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License through the Texas Department of Health within six (6) months of assigned responsibility in the City's Vector Control Program.
Must be available to work M-F 8am-5pm plus on call nights and weekends for vector control responsibilities.
