Description

JOB PROFILE: Chemometrician for High Throughput Labs

KEY FOCUS:

* Ensure optimal efficacy and efficiency of high throughput (HT) materials discovery in R&D through rigorous application of statistical and modeling tools

* Ensure quality of experimental data by applying statistical process control (SPC) to HT labs

* Maintain a practical balance between chemometric theory and its application to problems with real-world constraints and commercial pressures

* Serve as central trainer, advisor, and advocate to the scientific community in the use of statistical design, modeling, and visualization software

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Build intrinsic adoption of design of experiments (DoE), data mining, visualization and modeling tools through leadership by example, internal scientific publication, education, and advocacy / outreach

* Evaluate the effectiveness of completed HTE campaigns and the validity of inherent assumptions

* Support the integration of robust experimental methodologies, statistical process control (SPC), and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) in the HT laboratories

* Grow Albemarle's knowledge base by steering development of robust informatics platforms as the foundation for Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Apply in-depth knowledge of common statistical and chemometric methods to assist and guide scientists, engineers, and programmers in the use of DoE (process optimization, mixture designs) and data analysis tools (multivariate PCA, PLS, clustering, resampling, etc.)

* Maintain awareness of chemometric advancements through the review of literature sources and attending technical conferences; implement the most valuable approaches into daily processes

* Prepare educational materials for, deliver stakeholder-appropriate training to, and support all HT users on a routine and as-needed basis

* Supervise a programmer analyst in the development of a data management system that enables automatic data extraction, storage, categorization, integration, calculation, validation, querying, analysis, modeling, interpretation, and distribution to the technical and administrative community

* Demonstrate excellent customer service skills in a team environment

* Provide support to special projects throughout R&D on an as-needed basis as defined by supervision

* Manage multiple tasks and projects

* Work with other Albemarle's experts in chemometrics, computational chemistry, and modeling to define and implement a strategic vision for knowledge discovery, setting best practices and metrics to optimize lead finding potential across the company

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

* PhD in Chemometrics or Statistics with either prior degrees in Chemistry / Material Science /Chemical Engineering or a history of successfully applying statistical methods in the (petro)chemical industry

* ≥ 10 years of close involvement with experimental testing work and its related constraints, preferably with a specialization in:

o Catalyst development, performance testing, and kinetic modeling

o High throughput synthesis

o Analytical techniques (crystallography, spectroscopy, chromatography, imaging)

* Excellent communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to explain complex mathematical concepts in straightforward terms and to convince people of the usefulness of a systematic quantitative approach to conducting research

* Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment

* Programming proficiency in 3rd (e.g., FORTRAN, C, Visual Basic) and 4th (e.g., MatLab) generation languages
