Job Description

Overview:

As an HKS Venues Urban Design Leader, you will be responsible for orchestrating the work of project teams focused on design, development and delivery of outstanding solutions. You will continue to grow your design experience, relationship skills, collaboration and interpersonal skills while working on great projects for exceptional clients.

As a member of the Venues leadership team, Design Directors also collaborate with other practice leaders and the Interiors Design Fellowship to enhance the culture for design excellence, elevate the quality of design, and achieve recognition for clients and the firm.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs and manages complex and sensitive master planning and urban design assignments
  • Solicits work scopes from subconsultants and reviews proposals
  • Prepares project budgets and verifies contract expenditures and compliance to work scope
  • Participates in new business development efforts
  • Helps review lead pursuits for new business
  • Writes project understanding and work scope for master planning and urban design pursuits
  • Helps to assemble team for pursuit submissions by identifying potential subconsultants
  • Prepares fee estimate for pursuit submissions
  • Helps prepare presentations
  • Participates in interviews for pursuits
  • Negotiates fees for work scope
  • Prepares contract for work assignments
  • Outlines work schedule for assignment including subconsultants
  • Schedules and conducts meetings with clients and regulatory officials
  • Serves as day-to-day project liaison with clients
  • Supervises daily work production of the Urban Design Studio
  • Assigns work to professional staff and ensures appropriate training is provided
  • Reviews work by internal staff and subconsultants to keep project on budget and schedule
  • Adjusts work progress as needed to meet stated project objectives and deliverables
  • Participates in select industry organizations
  • Facilitates public workshops
  • Prepares and/or reviews design guidelines and design controls document

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of master planning and urban design as well as regulatory policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of specialization such as urban infill, waterfront revitalization, sports district development, new community development, healthcare campus plan, or university campus master planning
  • Research methods and principles related to urban growth and development
  • Methods and techniques of effective technical report preparation and presentation
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Principles and practices of supervision, training and personnel management
  • Budgeting procedures and techniques
  • Recent developments, current literature and sources of information related to master planning and urban design
  • Public engagement techniques and processes
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD software programs as well as full Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and full Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) software programs

Education and Experience:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree, a master's degree is preferred, in urban design or architecture
  • At least 10 years of professional work experience in architecture, urban design or master planning
  • Three to four years of supervisory experience
  • Architectural registration is preferred
