- Promote and support opportunities for newcomer immigrant students and families in the areas of education including: information regarding Bilingual/ESL education, benefits and goals, language acquisition, and drop-out prevention
- Provide ongoing parent education that is designed to empower them to advocate for and support their newcomer immigrant students
- Provide orientation on the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct to newcomer immigrant students and parents
- Inform parents of newcomer immigrant students regarding resources and services within the community that support language development and academic achievement
- Work closely with newcomer immigrant families to ensure they understand and are willing to utilize all the district and community services available to them
- Provide parents of newcomer immigrant students referrals to community outreach services, as needed
- Develop and maintain a database of parents whose children are newcomer immigrants enrolled through the Intake Center
- Develop and present regularly scheduled workshops and training programs for newcomer immigrant students and parents on assessed needs, including but not limited to: tutoring, ESL classes, and district information sessions
- Create and initiate a yearly action plan for optimizing parent and community involvement
- Develop and maintain a tracking system for parents of newcomer immigrant students that attend training opportunities
- Develop and implement the Summer Enrichment Program for newcomer immigrant students
- Create and maintain relationships with local community colleges and educational organizations that may aid in the success of newcomer immigrant students
- Construct a framework of support with all stakeholders involved in supporting and meeting the needs of newcomer immigrant students including various district departments (i.e., Office of Family and Community Engagement, Youth and Family Services, Special Education Department)
- Maintain the Parent Literacy Center within the Intake Center by ensuring up-to-date and relevant instructional and community resources are made available
- All federally funded incumbents of this position must comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personnel activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate
- Create a newcomer parent handbook that includes information for the various bilingual/ESL education programs offered by the district, the process of language acquisition, strategies to help their children improve academic achievement, Intake Center resources, and community outreach programs
- Keep abreast of current state and federal guidelines regarding newcomer immigrant students
- Research the latest bilingual/ESL education informational literature in order to inform parents and community stakeholders
- Collaborate with administrators and other district leaders to ensure increased newcomer parental awareness and involvement
- Work required evenings and Saturdays as required for Bilingual ESL Department and district events
