Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Certification as a Cytotechnologist by an approved accrediting agency required, with no additional experience.

Additional Information: Shift hours Monday through Friday, 8:45 AM- 5:15 PM with potential rotating weekends and holidays.

Job Duties

Responsible for the prompt, accurate, and efficient screening of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens and reporting the diagnostic results.
Microscopically examines gynecological and non-gynecological specimens including FNAs. Properly identifies and classifies all abnormal, precancerous, and cancerous changes.
Identifies infectious agents including viral changes, fungal and other parasitic organisms.
Identifies endocervical components when present; recognizes abnormal cell changes associated with radiation and chemotherapy changes. Enters results into LIS and verifies for report release.
Assures specimen labeling requirements are met and all necessary clinical information is available. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and specific factors that can influence test results.
Assists with or performs accessioning, processing, and staining of specimens in accordance with the cytology processing manual with only supervisor/pathologist-approved modifications or deviations.
Assists clinicians within the hospital for the procurement of material from fine needle aspirations.
Participates in quality control procedures and documents accordingly; participates in proficiency testing.
Assists laboratory assistants; participates in the training and orientation of new employees, as required and assigned. Writes and/or updates standard operating procedures as assigned.
Keeps work area physically clean, organized and free of safety hazards; properly disposes of all biohazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials; maintains adequate inventory to complete work, and orders supplies as needed.
Participates in process improvement activities and prepares routine Quality Assurance Indicator reports in a timely manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
