TITLE

Director, The Write Site Writing Center

JOB SUMMARY

The primary role of this position is to provide vision, leadership, and operational oversight for the TWU writing center, The Write Site; recruit, select, train, supervise, evaluate and schedule tutors; manage the budget; seek internal and external funding; remain current on and contribute to scholarship in the field; maintain and update training materials, materials to support clients, the web site, and scheduling software as needed; collaborate with faculty, staff, and other learning centers on campus; promote The Write Site and its services to raise the profile of the writing center; contribute to retention efforts. Work is performed under minimal supervision and performance is based upon effectiveness of leadership, performance of tutors, contributions to LCGS and TWU. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Chair of Language, Culture, and Gender Studies

Supervises: Tutors and Senior Secretary

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

  • Provides vision and leadership for The Write Site in keeping with best practices in the field of writing center studies.
  • Remains current on and contributes to scholarship on writing center theory and practice.
  • Communicates effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Provides for and maintains a professional, equitable and welcoming atmosphere in The Write Site.
  • Acts as liaison to faculty and administration communicating the center's mission and services.
  • Seeks internal and external funding, as appropriate, to support The Write Site.
  • Collaborates to advance student retention and support student success.
  • Provides professional development for tutors to ensure high quality face-to-face and online tutoring sessions aimed at improving student writing.
  • Coordinates with the Chair of LCGS and Director of FYC on cohesive pedagogy for writing instruction and support.
  • Collaborates with the Dean of the Libraries to ensure access to and the safety of The Write Site.
  • Oversees the physical facility and provides for the needs of The Write Site.
  • Supervises the work of a .50 FTE secretary.
  • Supervises, mentors, and evaluates the work of writing tutors.
  • Interviews, selects, (and dismisses as necessary) writing tutors from all disciplines.
  • Coordinates with the Chair of LCGS and Director of First-Year Composition to select or dismiss GA tutors funded by LCGS.
  • Develops materials and processes for professional development of tutors; regularly provides high quality professional development for tutors.
  • Seeks and implements (when appropriate) feedback from tutors on improving operations and services in The Write Site.
  • Conducts workshops for instructors and students on issues related to writing in any discipline or field.
  • Manages a complex budget and reports on the budget, seeking funding as needed.
  • Assists in gathering data related to The Write Site and preparation of institutional effectiveness reports.
  • Develops and monitors tutor schedules and approves time cards.
  • Submits annual reports to the chair of LCGS.
  • Ensures timely updates to revisions of the webpage as needed.
  • Promotes the center's services to students.
  • Responds to complaints about The Write Site (in collaboration with others as appropriate).

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATION

Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, or English required or must acquire Ph.D. within a 12-month period from the date of hire.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of three years of experience teaching writing in a college or university setting, experience working in writing centers, knowledge of writing center pedagogy, and potential for ongoing scholarly productivity (conferences and/or publications in the field of writing center studies) required. Five years of experience teaching writing in a diverse context, supervisory experience, and leadership experience preferred.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

May complete some or all work remotely upon approval via the university's Alternative Work Arrangement Policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
