Job Summary

The Clinical Pharmacy Manager manages clinical activities, priorities, and problems, pharmacist staffing and workloads. This position will focus on clinical investigational drug pharmacy program for hematology-oncology service.

Additional Duties:

  • Provides status report to pharmacy management effectively communicating issues, concerns, and suggestions as appropriate.
  • Manages and develops clinical initiatives and determines therapeutic alternatives when drug shortages are identified and communicates with medical staff leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Assists with budget preparation and daily financial activity specifically in relation to high cost drugs.

  • Assists the Director and Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy with meeting administrative goals and objectives.
  • Manages Investigational Drug Services- Hematology/Oncology clinical activities, priorities, and problems, pharmacist staffing and workloads.

  • Maintains and enforces organizational and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement initiatives, environmental and infection control standards.

Experience and Education

  • 3 years pharmacy management experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree or PharmD from ACPE accredited school of pharmacy
  • Eligible for licensure by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) is required and Texas license with TSBP within 30 days of date of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required by start date.
  • Computer skills, data entry
  • English (speaking, reading, writing). Good general health and stress coping ability. Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of PGY1 and PGY2 ASHP-accredited residency program highly preferred
  • Experience in oncology and oncology investigational drug service highly preferred.
  • 3-years of pharmacy management experience
  • PGY1 and PGY2 ASHP-accredited residency program preferred
  • Oncology and/or investigational drug service experience preferred

Job Duties

  • Assists the Director and Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy with meeting administrative goals and objectives.
  • In the absence of the Director or when requested, represents the pharmacy department knowledgeably and professionally at all meetings, conferences, committees.
  • Manages the development of the clinical practice of the staff and department.
  • Provides a learning environment which fosters the improvement, growth, and development of staff through teaching, mentoring, and coaching processes.
  • Assists the Director and Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy with implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the departmental strategic plan and standards of care.
  • Mentors staff in good decision-making skills, and problem identification and resolution processes.
  • Promotes staff ownership of the work environment encouraging process improvement actions.
  • Takes charge when necessary and is looked to for direction in a crisis; focuses on priorities in peak workload periods.
  • Makes the right decisions; uses good judgement; sought out by others for advice.
  • Maintains high visibility and availability through participation in departmental meetings and daily activities.
  • Maintains effective communications with coordinators and technical staff providing leadership and support and assisting staff as necessary.

  • Assists with budget preparation and daily financial activity specifically in relation to high cost drugs.
  • Actively involved in the interview, selection and hiring of qualified candidates.
  • Evaluates employee performance.
  • Completes annual appraisals in a timely manner and provides documentation of commendations or disciplinary actions.
  • Manages and develops clinical initiatives.
  • Determines therapeutic alternatives when drug shortages are identified and communicates with medical staff leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessments, pharmacokinetic calculations and other clinical duties.
  • Actively teaches pharmacists and pharmacy students in clinical practice.
  • Actively enhances personal growth, development, and management skills by review of current literature, participating in continuing educational programs, in-services and meetings.
  • Strives to improve patient satisfaction scores.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in any UT Southwestern Pharmacy or campus building.
