Summary
Responsible for providing assistance to the Physician and other medical staff providing medical services to employees and other eligible patients of the CityCare Clinic.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Obtain and document patient vital signs, medical history, current medications, and chief complaints.
Assist in examinations, assessments and treatment of patient acute and/or chronic health problems and minor injuries.
Administer oral and injectable drugs.
Assist in emergency medical situations, perform wound care, dressing and re-dressing, and calculate dosages of medications.
Perform phlebotomy, urine tests, blood glucose tests, spirometry, peak flows and conduct routine lab procedures.
Enter, maintain, and retrieve data from various paper and electronic sources.
Maintain supply inventories, order and stock supplies. Maintain exam room supplies.
Assist with insurance pre-approvals, triage over the phone, education and administers allergy shots.
Document and maintain patient records.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Medical Assistant Training Course completed
1 year experience in a medical office, clinic and/or family practice
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/ Experience:
1 year medical, specialized vocational, administrative, or technical study beyond High School
1 - 2 years experience performing medical assistant work in a family practice
Experience working in an electronic medical records system
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
General knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and application to acute and some chronic general medical conditions
General knowledge of pediatrics, geriatrics, and family practice
Advance skill in phlebotomy, administering injections IM, SQ and ID, and assisting with minor surgeries
Ability to obtain vital signs, perform routine lab procedures, urine tests, blood glucose tests, and perform first aid, CPR, wound care and dressing
Ability to calculate dosage of medications and operate lab and medical testing equipment such as centrifuge, EKG, AED, autoclave, etc.
Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, department managers, and health service contractors
Ability to understand and implement verbal and written instructions
Ability to operate a personal computer
Licenses and Certifications
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) preferred
Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Completion of Non-Certified Radiological Technician training course preferred
CPR certification preferred
DOT/Breath and Alcohol (BA) Technician certification preferred
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
The incumbent works in a typical office/clinic environment with exposure to patient illness and may be subjected to occasional travel to various job sites and health care facilities. May require sitting, standing, lifting, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling during examination of patients. Routinely works with medical sharps requiring universal precautions to avoid contact with pathogens. May be exposed to biohazards and infections carried by humans and bodily fluids.
