GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

  • Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications, drugs, and other pharmaceuticals for patient care, according to professional standards and state and federal legal requirements: Reviews prescriptions issued by physician, or other authorized prescriber to assure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients. Directs pharmacy employees in mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. Answers questions and provides information to pharmacy customers on drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and storage of pharmaceuticals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree in pharmacy required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy preferred.
  • Must have a current license in the state of Texas.
  • Interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with physicians and various other hospital personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Educate healthcare professionals and patients on medication use as well as compounding and dispensing prescribed medications for patient care.
  • Performs professional and technical activities associated with distribution of medications, maintenance of drug inventory, patient records and patient financial records.
  • Supervises interns and technicians for assigned area. Adheres to policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.
  • Accepts total responsibility for orders including review, clarification, order entry, accuracy, preparation, follow up and delivery to correct unit. Identifies, intervenes, and assures resolution when problems involving drug therapy are identified.
  • Visually reads and interprets physician's orders including drug product, strength, dosage, start and stop time, initial inventory quantity, etc. Assures that appropriate products are selected to prepare the dose accurately.
  • Routinely follows internal procedures in the pharmacy and on nursing units to verify controlled substance inventories, minimize drug diversion and document wastes or missing doses.
  • Routinely checks for expired drugs.
  • Routinely performs nursing unit inspections, narcotics audits, nursing/pharmacy meetings.

  • The employee must be able to lift and/or carry over 20 pounds on a regular basis and be able to push/pull over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • The employee must be able to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
