Overview
The Data and Voice Technician (Telecommunications Technician) will perform and fully document IT infrastructure "Moves, Adds, and Changes" to meet contractor, student, faculty, and staff needs for voice and data connections, including telephone handsets, and edge data infrastructure. Work independently on assigned projects, including but not limited to warehouse duties, material auditing, uninterruptible power supply installation and maintenance as well as utility locating as needed. Work with clients and customers. Maintain and organize flow of materials and work area. Complete work orders as assigned through the IT Service Desk, Team Manager, and/or Project Managers.


Responsibilities
DATA & VOICE TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform Moves, Adds, and Changes, as assigned, to end user voice and data services with minimal disruption to user and departmental functionality. This includes telephone handsets, and USU physical data connections and other items as assigned.
  • Provide basic infrastructure technical consultation and advisement for customers pertaining to moves, adds, and changes of physical data connections and telephone service.
  • Identify and recommend move, add, and change process and procedure improvements to the Team Manager and IT Administration.
  • Perform edge data switch installation and cross connects as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot problems regarding end user voice (including handset and voicemail) and basic data connection services.
  • Troubleshoot and replace telephones and telephone accessories.
  • Monitor and review inventory levels by physical count, record keeping and/or visual inspection to identify need for purchasing materials, equipment or supplies.
  • Install Outside Plant copper/fiber optic cabling.
  • Fusion Spicing/Termination of fiber optic cable
  • Install security cameras, wireless access point and UPS systems.
  • UPS installation and maintenance
  • Utility locating campus wide, Statewide.
  • Warehouse duties as assigned.

IT INFRASTRUCTURE MAPPING AND DOCUMENTATION:
  • Ensure that infrastructure records for voice and data system cable and equipment are accurate and up to date.
  • Maintain accurate wire management records of voice station equipment and cable pair assignments. This requires an in-depth knowledge of existing campus infrastructure including tunnels, maintenance holes, fiber optic cabling, copper cabling and node sites.
  • Maintain up-to-date geographical information regarding location of utilities, including development of systems and procedures to facilitate those processes for the organization.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of existing campus infrastructure including tunnels, maintenance holes, fiber optic cabling, copper cabling and node sites.
  • Daily monitoring and mapping of new and relocated IT infrastructure.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Three years of experience; or an associate degree/technical training in a related field plus one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior USU experience.
  • Knowledge of USU policies and procedures.
  • BICSI, NEC or other standards/best-practice installer-level certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, work well under pressure, manage multiple/routine tasks simultaneously, take initiative within project scope, maintain confidentiality, and work with little supervision.
  • Basic computer skills (Data Entry, Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet).
  • Demonstrated capacity for exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Attention to detail and follow up.
  • Willingness to undertake any necessary training needed to perform job functions or to enhance performance.
  • Experience performing data and voice moves adds and changes.
  • Ability to learn new systems.
  • Ability to work well with other technical staff in a team environment.
  • Ability to train others, both non-technical end-users and technical staff.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to complete work orders in an effective and timely manner.
  • Strong, established track record of exceptional customer service.
