Overview
The Department of Campus Recreation within the Division of Student Affairs at Utah State University seeks a positive, collaborative and dynamic individual to join our team as our Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness (Program Coordinator II). Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Programs and Assessment, the Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness is directly responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, and daily operations of all aspects of the Utah State University Fitness and Wellness program. This individual will be a key team member of the Campus Recreation Department, which provides aquatic programs, club sports, fitness/wellness, intramurals, outdoor recreation, special events, extramurals, summer camps and collaborative programs.


Responsibilities
Program Management
  • Provide leadership and direction while overseeing the development and operation of a diverse Fitness and Wellness program to include but limited to group fitness classes, revenue generating personal training, nutrition coaching, mind/body exercise prescription, strength and conditioning, special events, and wellness workshops
  • Implement new and innovative programs and/or services to remain current with industry-wide trends while meeting the demands of an active and growing student population
    • Compile, prepare, and maintain accurate participant and program data such as budget, participation numbers, injuries, and incident reports
    • Develop training manuals, workshops, and a comprehensive staff development program
    • Establish a vision and assess for program growth and development through systematic strategic planning and the implementation of short and long-term goals
    • Review and evaluate fitness policies and procedures to ensure that appropriate risk management precautions and procedures are in place and remain compliant with the requirements of the university
    • Oversee PE 1070 Fitness & Conditioning academic class
    • Responsible for inventory and maintaining Fitness and Wellness programming equipment within the Aggie Recreation Center and George Nelson Fieldhouse
    • Understand and represent the mission and vision of Utah State University Campus Recreation Department
    • Assist with the marketing and promotion of the Fitness and Wellness programs
    • Serves on departmental, university, and/or national committees

Personnel Management
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, and, at times, evaluation of one Graduate Assistant, Group Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers, and other support staff
  • Conduct ongoing staff evaluations, monitor certifications, and conduct annual assessments of programming and student leaders
  • Teach group fitness classes or personal training session in the event of staff absence
  • Coordinate and administer in-service trainings and/or workshops for the fitness team to ensure fitness staff is current and compliant with industry safety and instructional standards
  • Develop and implement an Instructor Training Program to provide new and existing staff members with standardized policies, procedures, and best practices in accordance with industry standards and university policies.
  • Ensure delivery of a comprehensive student development program for student staff within Campus Recreation Programs.

Budget Management
  • Research, develop, monitor, and adhere to the Fitness and Wellness program budgets.
  • Oversee program payroll, tracking, and approvals
  • Coordinate the purchasing of fitness equipment, supplies, and material needs for program operations

Research & Assessment
  • Evaluate all Fitness and Wellness programs and services to determine overall effectiveness and satisfaction to decide on possible changes as deemed appropriate
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Fitness and Wellness research and assessment agenda to include development of student and program learning outcomes

Other
  • Prepare written communications such as monthly reports, annual reports, participation statistics, etc.
  • Actively participate on a variety of Campus Recreation and university committees as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university preferably with a major in sports management, recreation administration, physical education, kinesiology/exercise science, business administration, or a related field.
  • Equivalent of two years full-time, professional level experience managing and developing Fitness and Wellness programs during which time the applicant has acquired and demonstrated the ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Prior experience managing and supervising fitness instructors, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, or equivalent.
  • ACSM/ACE group exercise instructor certification, ACSM/ACE personal trainer certification, NSCA strength and condition certification, or equivalent specialty certifications recognized in the fitness industry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the following:
    • Administration, personnel & organizational management, budgeting, computer hardware/software operation, principles of superior customer service, and effective marketing.
  • Demonstrate ability to do the following:
    • Interpret and apply university, Campus Recreation, and USU rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Establish programmatic goals, facilitate change, and implement innovative programs and services. Oversee the work of others. Coordinate the timely completion of multiple tasks. Work independently under general supervision. Work as a part of a team to reach set goals. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Generate and follow verbal and written instructions. Provide excellent customer service. Adapt to changes in the work environment. Work effectively in a multicultural environment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Work varying hours including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in related field preferred
  • Two or more years of professional experience developing Fitness and Wellness programming in a collegiate recreation setting
  • Experience instructing a variety of fitness classes (e.g. Yoga, Zumba, Strength and Conditioning, Bootcamps, HIIT, Cycling, etc.)
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)
  • Standard Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED and/or instructor certification
  • Active involvement within NIRSA - Leaders in Collegiate Recreation
